Year of the Tiger, February 1, 2022

Are you ready for the Tiger? Chinese New Year (also known as Lunar New Year) is fast approaching! The most important of Chinese holidays, it signifies the end of Winter and the beginning of Spring. The festival lasts for 15 days and is a time for family and friends to gather, eat, give gifts, and celebrate. Many superstitious traditions are followed:

  • A thorough house cleaning before New Year’s Eve will sweep out all the bad from the past year.
  • Foods that bring good fortune will be prepared.
  • The color red will be everywhere to bring good luck, happiness, and prosperity.

The Chinese Zodiac

Chinese New Year follows the Chinese Zodiac and is based on twelve animals. While variations exist, legend has it that over 2000 years ago, the Jade Emperor summoned all the animals of the universe to a Great Race to select twelve personal guards. The results also determined the order of the animals in the calendar cycle. The rat finished first followed by the ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig.

You Are A Tiger…

if you were born in 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, or 2022.

In the Chinese Zodiac, tigers are the king of animals and the center of attention. They are born leaders, bold, confident, and competitive. Tigers are well-liked and charming but tend to be stubborn and unpredictable. They like to do things their way and dislike being told what to do, but they are generous and are known to help others. Tigers are compatible with Horses, Dogs, and Pigs. They are not as good with Oxen, Snakes, Goats, and Monkeys.

If you are a Tiger, does this mean this is your lucky year? Sorry, but no! It’s actually the opposite of what you may believe. Your animal year is not your best year. However, with your “go big or go home” attitude, you may fair better than others during their animal years. You could also give your luck a boost by knowing your lucky numbers (1, 3, 4) and lucky colors (blue, green, orange). Make note that your unlucky numbers are 6, 7, and 8. You should probably avoid the color brown while you’re at it. (Sip! packaging and drinking chocolate are not brown, by the way!)
